German coach Hansi Flick will remain in office until Euro 2024, organized in Germany, despite the elimination of Mannschaft in the first round of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, the federation announced on Wednesday (DFB). .

The German Football Federation has confirmed that Hansi Flick was retained as Germany coach despite the FIFA World Cup fiasco in Qatar and elimination from the group stages.

"We are convinced together that the European Championship 2024 in our country represents a great opportunity for football in Germany. (...) We have full confidence in Hansi Flick to take up this challenge", declared the president of the DFB , Bernd Neuendorf.

After a pitiful exit in the 1st round of the 2018 World Cup in Russia when it was defending champion, Germany was eliminated at the same stage of the competition in Qatar, after a defeat against Japan (2-1), a match draw against Spain (1-1) and a victory against Costa Rica (4-2).

Under contract until 2024

"My team and I are optimistic about the European championship in our country", however wants to believe Flick, quoted in the press release.

"As a team we can do much better than what we showed in Qatar," said the former Bayern Munich manager.

Flick, 57, took over from Joachim Löw after Euro 2021. Under contract until 2024, he had affirmed his desire to continue in his position despite the early elimination of the selection.

"I have confidence in the common path agreed today with Bernd Neuendorf and (DFB deputy director) Aki Watzke. We all want the whole of Germany to come together behind the national team again in the Euro 2024 at home," adds Hansi Flick.

"With regard to the succession of Oliver Bierhoff, we have agreed to discuss first within the DFB the future structure in this area, before taking a decision", specifies for his part the president of the DFB.

Germany, accustomed to the last four of major competitions in the past, remains on three resounding failures, not reaching the quarter-finals three times in a row, a first in its history.

In 18 months, in the summer of 2024, Germany will host the European Championship, with the aim of regaining a place among the continent's elite.
