FIFA has banned Denmark from training in pro-human rights shirts at the World Cup in Qatar, the Danish FA announced on Thursday.

The international federation rejected the Danish request to use these jerseys bearing the message “Human Rights for All” (“Human rights for all”), confirmed to AFP a spokesperson for the DBU, which wants to be at the forefront defending respect for migrant workers and LGBT rights in Qatar.

“We have sent a request to FIFA, but the response is negative.

We regret it, but we have to take it into account,” its managing director, Jakob Jensen, told Danish agency Ritzau.

The DBU disputes that it is a political message, but will comply with the ruling to avoid fines and penalties, it said.

An all-black third jersey

At the end of September, Hummel, the sponsor of the Nordic selection, unveiled a completely black third jersey, "the color of mourning" according to him.

These jerseys are "a protest against Qatar and its human rights record", explained the sports equipment supplier, adding "not wishing to be visible during a tournament which has cost the lives of thousands of people".

A reference to the human toll on Qatari construction sites, which is strongly contested by Doha.

For its part, FIFA last week wrote a letter to the 32 teams qualified for the World Cup, asking them to "focus on football".

“We know that football does not exist in a vacuum, and we are equally aware of the many challenges and difficulties of a political nature in the world, was it in this letter signed by Gianni Infantino and Fatma Samoura, respectively president and secretary general of the instance.

But please don't let football be dragged into every ideological or political battle.
