Griner is sentenced to nine years in prison for drug possession.

Her case has long been the subject of big politics.

US President Joe Biden and his administration are trying to find a solution to get Griner free, but so far have not met with any Russian response.

Griner, a two-time Olympic gold medalist and one of the top players in the US professional league WNBA, was sentenced on August 4 to nine years in prison and fined after Russian authorities found cannabis oil in her luggage when she landed at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport in February.

The American admitted the possession, but defended herself by saying that she had been prescribed cannabis as a pain reliever and that she had no criminal intent.
