Luge legend Georg Hackl spoke about the background to his move to the coaching staff of the Austrian Luge Association (ÖRV) and was nostalgic about it.

"I thought about it for a long time, because with such a decision you leave a lot of friendships behind," said the 55-year-old in an interview with Sport1.

"There are no new opportunities in life if you don't lose something in the process - otherwise it would be too easy, but the challenge simply lured me," says Hackl, who also spoke about the lengthy poaching process: "It's no secret that this offer has been made to me by the Austrian side for several years.”

The commitment to the three-time Olympic champion is also worthwhile from a financial point of view: "Of course there was also an improvement in pay, otherwise you wouldn't change." According to Hackl, the main reason for the change was not the salary: "The most important thing was that there is more freedom for me in the summer.” Since the Austrians had their equipment produced by high-tech companies, the coach no longer had to be “in the workshop from morning to night” during the pre-season and would have more time for private life.

Hackl refrained from openly criticizing the German Bobsleigh and Sled Association (BSD): “I always pulled together with my protégés.

I don't want to address the rest."

The change from Berchtesgaden to the Austrian Toboggan Association has been official since Thursday afternoon.

"With the commitment of Georg Hackl, a personal wish has come true," said ÖRV President Markus Prock.

"I'm very happy, but also proud, that he has chosen us." Hackl is said to be able to contribute his expertise, particularly in material matters, and will receive a contract in Austria until 2026.

Hackl last worked as a coach for the German lugers at the Olympic Games in Beijing and was jointly responsible for winning all four gold medals.

During his career he has won three Olympic gold and two silver medals.

There are also three world championship titles in single-seaters.
