The Colombian Bernal drove into a stationary bus at 60 km per hour in his hometown of Zipaquira, 50 km north of the capital Bogota.
He suffered a fracture in a vertebra, right femur, right kneecap, suffered a chest trauma and a punctured lung.
According to his own statement, there was a 95 percent risk that he would be disabled in connection with the accident.

Bernal won the Tour de France 2019 and the Giro d'Italia last year.
He recently extended his contract with the Ineos-Grenadiers stable until 2026.
