Brawl at soccer match in Mexico leaves 22 injured

Mexican authorities announced that at least 22 people were injured after a brawl yesterday, when fans stormed the stadium in a Premier League match between Queretaro and Atlas, the champions of last season.

Pictures and videos appeared on social media with some people being beaten and kicked, while others appeared on the ground and blood dripping from them in what appeared to be inside the stands of the Queretaro City Stadium. Reuters was not able to independently verify the footage, which was also shown by local television stations.

The Mexican League said on Twitter: "The violence in the La Corregidora stadium in Queretaro is unacceptable and regrettable. Exceptional sanctions will be imposed on those responsible for the lack of security in the stadium."

The match was stopped after 62 minutes while Atlas advanced 1-0.

And the Civil Protection authorities announced that nine people, out of 22 injured, were taken to hospital, two of them in serious condition.
