The tension was instead behind the Dutchman, where Hamilton in second place was frantically chased by Mexican home skier Sergio Perez.

But Hamilton held off and finished second, 16 seconds behind Verstappen.

Perez finished third and made sure there were two Red Bull drivers on the podium.

With four races left of the championship, Max Verstappen leads by 19 points down to the Mercedes competitor and reigning world champion Hamilton.

- Of course it looks good, but it can turn quickly, says Verstappen in the victory interview.

Next weekend awaits the GP race in São Paulo, Brazil.
