After the violent death of the fourth Olympic athlete, Agnes Tirop from Kenya, the police arrested the athlete's partner.

The main suspect in the case was stopped while trying to escape in a suburb of Mombasa and is now being questioned, the police in Kenya said on Friday night.

The road running world record holder Tirop was found dead in her home in Iten in the north-west of the country on Wednesday.

The partner is suspected of having stabbed the runner, the police said. Her lifeless body was found with stab wounds. Her partner then went into hiding until he was tracked down by the police. According to the authorities, the man was on his way abroad to avoid possible arrest. He is now to be charged with murder.

Kenya has lost a jewel, the country's athletics federation had declared.

One is beside oneself with grief for the aspiring runner.

A month ago, Tirop had set a world record over ten kilometers on the road in pure women's races at a race in Herzogenaurach.

The 25-year-old won bronze medals in the 10,000 meter championship twice and took part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo for Kenya, where she was fourth in the 5000 meters in August.

As a 19-year-old Tirop won the world title in cross in 2015.
