Kenyan Agnes Tirop was found lifeless in her home on Wednesday.

- When the police entered the house, they found Tirop on the bed and there was a pool of blood on the floor, says Tom Makori, head of the local police, according to the BBC.

- They saw that she had been stabbed in the neck, which we believe caused her death.

According to Makori, the police suspect that a close relative is behind Tirop's death, and explain that the person is still at large.

The reason for the suspicions is that the person can not be found.

The police are still looking for details about the incident.

"We have lost a young and promising athlete"

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has spoken out about the tragedy.

"It is worrying, very unfortunate and very sad that we have lost a young and promising athlete who, at as young an age as 25, has given our country so much glory," he said according to the BBC.

Tirop participated in the Olympics in Tokyo and landed a fourth place in the final of 5000 meters.

In September, she set a world record of 10 kilometers in 30:01.

On October 23, Agnes Tirop would turn 26 years old.
