The American football superstar, Tom Brady, matched three touchdowns and made sure that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the top-ranked home team Green Bay Packers 31-26 in Sunday's semifinal at Lambeau Field in Wisconsin.

- It has been a long journey and today it was a fantastic team effort, Brady said during the ceremony after the match.

- I have loved going to work every day with this gang.

I'm so proud of the whole team, says Brady but adds that there remains a difficult match.

The 43-year-old undeniably knows what he's talking about.

Historic home ground

With his old club New England Patriots, he made history by becoming the first NFL player to win six Super Bowl titles.

After 20 years at the club, he aimed for a new challenge when he switched to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before this season.

When he steps out on the Super Bowl field on February 7, he will do so for the tenth time in his career.

It will also be the first time in NFL history that one of the final teams will play in his home arena - it has already been decided that the final will be played at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Kansas City in the new final

Opponents will be the reigning champion team Kansas City Chiefs, who last night beat the Buffalo Bills in the second semifinal.

The team ended up at an early disadvantage with nine points, but managed to turn around and eventually win by 38-24, after superstar Patrick Mahomes, who was ready for play on Friday after a concussion, passed three touchdowns.

Kansas City could thus become the first team to defend its Super Bowl title since the New England Patriots did so in the 2004 season.

Tampa Bay won its only Super Bowl title to date in 2002, beating the Oakland Raiders 48-21.

It was also the last time Tampa Bay reached the grand final of American football.
