The French international of Borussia Mönchengladbach, Marcus Thuram, received a red card on Saturday after spitting in the face of an opponent, during the defeat of his club against Hoffenheim in the German Championship (2-1) and risks a long suspension despite an apology presented after the meeting.

Thuram was sent off the pitch after an appeal to video arbitration (VAR) showed the player spitting in the face of Hoffenheim defender Stefan Posch with 11 minutes remaining after Andrej Kramaric equalized for Hoffenheim at Borussia Park.

“I reacted in the wrong way,” admitted the player in a message posted on Instagram and Twitter, referring to an “accidental”, “unintentional” gesture which “should never happen” and apologizing to Stefan Posch as well as his teammates, his family and "everyone who witnessed (his) reaction," he added.

The former Guingampais indicated that he "would accept all the consequences of his gesture", while he could be the subject of a long suspension.

Nine minutes after the exclusion of the French international (23 years, 3 caps), Ryan Sessegnon allowed Hoffenheim to take a decisive advantage by taking a cross at the near post, his goal giving the victory to his club.

Borussia remain on a streak of six games without a win in all competitions, and are now in 8th place in the Bundesliga.

But he has qualified for the knockout stages of the Champions League and will meet Manchester City in February.
