• Tour.Coppi, Anquetil, Merckx ... the challenge for those chosen to win the Tour as a rookie that Pogacar pursues

The

Tour de France organization

announced on Tuesday that the

785 PCR tests

carried out during the second rest day have yielded negative results.

This implies that there have been

no new infected

in the peloton and among the assistants and that the race will be able to continue without any shocks.

The

157 runners

who are still in competition will therefore be able to start this Wednesday's stage, a mid-mountain day that starts at La Tour du Pin and will finish at the top of Villard de Lans.

On the first day of rest, 841 tests were carried out (there were more cyclists in the race then and, therefore, also more assistants) which yielded five positives.

Four corresponded to members of the staffs of

Ineos, Ag2r, Cofidis and Mitchelton

and one to a worker from one of the suppliers contracted by the organization.

Outside of the 'bubble', the director of the Tour, Christian Prudhomme, was also infected, who during the past week had to quarantine in a hotel in La Rochelle and delegate his functions to François Lemarchand.

Tour protocol specified that a team would be expelled from the race if two of its members, riders or not, tested positive within a week.

The existence of a positive in four different teams did not leave them on the verge of expulsion, since two positives would have been necessary in this test round of the second rest day for the penalty to have been effective.

The

full negatives

in this second round has implications that exceed the Tour itself.

The protocol designed for a safe development of the race has been proven effective and that is a

relief for the tests that remain until the end of the season

, especially for the

Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España

, great tours that part of the cycling community feared that could not be celebrated because of the pandemic.

The success of the Tour's anticovid measures paves the way for a normal development (taking into account the circumstances) of the Italian race (which starts on October 3) and of the Spanish (October 20).
