Due to the corona pandemic, this year's edition of Wimbledon was canceled, something that has not happened since the Second World War.

Thus, a large amount of strawberries (over 26,000) were to be sold to the audience during competition over. Now they are donated to staff at the British Government Health Organization, NHS, as a thank you for their work in connection with the corona pandemic.

"Since the tournament was canceled, we have been very focused on what we can do to help the people in our community who have gone through difficulties in the corona crisis," said Richard Lewis, manager of the All England Club, which organizes Wimbledon, according to the news agency Reuters.

"Surprising gesture"

The first delivery of strawberries went to St. George's Hospital Charity on Monday.

"It was a fantastic and surprising gesture and a great sign of appreciation for our amazing staff who have worked tirelessly during this crisis," said hospital CEO Amerjit Chohan.
