• Regulations: The rules for driving in the different phases of de-escalation

It will be due to how empty the roads are, or it will be the rush to comply with certain deliveries or schedules. In one way or another, the DGT has warned that the behavior of drivers who may hit the road is not being as careful as it should be.

On the one hand, a study carried out on a sample of 170 control sections (fixed and section radars) has shown that the percentage of drivers of light vehicles traveling with speeding has increased by 39% compared to the same dates of the year. past.

Logically, this data should never be understood in absolute terms but with respect to the number of controlled vehicles, since the number of trips by road has decreased on average by -69%, a percentage that rises to -78.29% if only Take light vehicles into account. Something that has allowed speed "to be really what the motorist has wanted and not the combination of that intention and the reality of traffic," says Álvaro Gómez, director of the DGT's Road Safety Observatory.

The percentage, however, does not distinguish between passenger cars and vans (especially delivery vans) since the latter are much more present on the roads and have been on the blacklist for years due to the joyous pace at which they circulate. In fact, everything points to an excess of speed (or an oversight) was what caused a van to collide yesterday against a passenger car in the Madrid M40 causing the death of its driver.

Less belt and more accidents on motorways

The DGT data also do not distinguish between vehicles with respect to the other anomalous behavior detected these weeks: the lower use of the seat belt, if we take as a reference the number of deaths. Of the 24 registered on board a light vehicle since the alarm started, 10 of them were not wearing it.

Specifically, from March 15 to May 7, the number of fatal accidents has decreased by 71%, and that of deceased persons has decreased by 69%. There have been 49 fatalities, compared to 159 in the same period. The state of alarm has also led to other changes in accidents: highways and expressways have registered 39% of fatalities, when that percentage is around 25%.

The most frequent accident with victims continues to be the road exit, but has increased its percentage from 35% to 65% of the total, something that Traffic explains in distractions and speeding, two risk factors that are multiplied by the casualties traffic intensities of many roads.

The Civil Guard controls continue

The DGT notice comes when many regions of our country will go to phase 1 of the de-escalation starting next Monday, which will mean that new workers will return to their jobs and travel will rise significantly. For this fact in itself and because many will opt for the private vehicle since there are no traffic jams and also avoid the risk of contagion. Hence, remember to also avoid distractions to a minimum since within the cities there are more and more pedestrians and cyclists every day.

For its part, both the Traffic Group and the rest of the Police will reinforce their controls this weekend to prevent undue displacement. Those authorized are still those collected in the first seven cases, although others have already been added, such as going to pick up food at a restaurant or going to a store, always within our municipality. Instead, we will still be fined if we use the car to move to second homes, or to go to natural places to walk or play sports.
