The international player union FIFPro is concerned that more and more clubs are cutting player salaries as a result of the stoppages of competitions due to the outbreak of the corona virus.

"We are calling on clubs to discuss with the national unions what needs to be done," FIFPro wrote in a statement on its own website on Saturday.

Among the clubs that have cut player salaries are also the necessary European superpowers. For example, the players of FC Barcelona, who earn 500 million euros annually, should temporarily lose 70 percent of the wages.

"We understand the problems, but it cannot be the case that things that players are entitled to are simply put aside," said FIFPro.

"Many players are hit very hard"

At relatively smaller clubs, the players did not just settle for a reduction in salary. At FC Sion, nine players refused to respond too late, after which they were fired by the club immediately.

"Apart from some European top competitions, there is often little income for footballers. In many countries they really earn no more than an average salary. As a result, many players are now hit very hard."

As far as we know, clubs in the Netherlands have not cut player salaries, but many, including PSV, have applied for working time reductions for players and staff, so they don't have to worry about their jobs.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
