Tom Dumoulin will exchange Team Sunweb for Jumbo-Visma after this season. De Limburger had his contract with Sunweb dissolved after eight years and reportedly signed with his new team for three years.

"There was always interest from other teams, but the facilities here were always so good that I never commented on that," says Dumoulin in a statement on Monday about his departure from Sunweb. "After the Tour missed out, I thought it would be a good time for a new step, given the great offers I received."

Less than two hours after Sunweb officially confirmed the departure of Dumoulin, Jumbo-Visma announced that the team will strengthen itself with the Limburger from next season. It is the first time that he is going to ride as a pro for a team other than Sunweb.

The 28-year-old Dumoulin has been associated for some time with a departure from Sunweb, where he still had a contract up to and including 2021. The Giro winner of 2017 would no longer see it in the team management of the cycling team.

At the beginning of July, Dumoulin was already linked to Jumbo-Visma. The Dutch cycling team already has two strong classification riders with Steven Kruijswijk and the Slovenian Primoz Roglic. 32-year-old Kruijswijk finished third in July in the Tour de France and 29-year-old Roglic came third in the Giro d'Italia this year.

Dramatic cycling year for Dumoulin

Dumoulin just had a disastrous cycling year. The Dutchman crashed hard in the first week of the Giro and suffered a nasty knee injury. He hoped to be fit for the Tour de France in time and even participated in the Critérium du Dauphiné, but participation in the Tour de France proved not to be feasible.

Team Sunweb had some hope that Dumoulin might be able to participate in the Vuelta a España - the Tour of Spain starts on August 24 - but his knee injury turned out to be more serious than expected. At the beginning of August it was announced that he would also have to miss the last big round of the year.

It is not clear whether Dumoulin is fit enough to participate in the World Championships in Yorkshire at the end of September. The men's time trial is scheduled for Wednesday 25 September and the road race will be held on Sunday 29 September.

Dumoulin achieved many successes in his period at Sunweb. In addition to his victory in the 2017 Giro, he was crowned the world time trial champion that year. Last year Dumoulin finished second in the Tour of Italy and the Tour de France.
