Miyagi Ishinomaki Dec. 2 11:19

Demolition work has begun in earnest at the former Kadowaki Elementary School in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, which is to be preserved as part of the Great East Japan Earthquake.

The former Kadowaki Elementary School in Ishinomaki City was flooded by the tsunami of the earthquake to the first floor of a three-story school building, and then burned down by the fire that occurred.

Ishinomaki City has decided to preserve the former Kadowaki Elementary School as an earthquake disaster remains, but in consideration of maintenance costs and earthquake resistance, both ends of the school building with a total length of about 100m will be demolished by about 20m.

The demolition work began in earnest on the 2nd, and workers used heavy machinery to tear down the walls and windows of the western school building.

Ishinomaki City is aiming to open the former Kadowaki Elementary School as the earthquake disaster remains in the next fiscal year, but the school building where the damage from the tsunami and fire was left intact, such as the walls being burnt black, the ceiling falling off and the framework exposed. Access to the inside is prohibited, and people will see it from the “observation building” that will be set up next to it.

Full-scale dismantling work will be carried out until the end of this month.
