THE THEME OF THE DAY

Trump's failure in Hanoi

"Sometimes you just have to leave": With this simple sentence, Donald Trump tried to explain why his summit meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Hanoi had been prematurely ended - and no tangible result.

For the US president, it is a disaster. Because he wanted to present himself to the world public as a dealmaker - and perhaps he would have made even more hopes for the Nobel Peace Prize in a successful conclusion with Kim. What really went wrong in Hanoi is still unclear. Trump himself claims the talks have failed because the North Korean head of state has called on the US to lift all sanctions in exchange for little progress in dismantling the nuclear program. In South Korea, the failure of the summit was received with mixed feelings.

Trump had also hoped to distract with the summit from the hearing of Michael Cohen in the US Congress. His former lawyer called him a racist and a lawbreaker.
