The theme of the day: The "Silk Road" summit in China

In Beijing, the second summit on the gigantic infrastructure project "New Silk Road" started on Friday. The importance of the project is also reflected in the number of participants: Representatives from more than 100 countries traveled to the Chinese capital for this, including just under 40 heads of state and government. From Germany Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier participates. President Xi Jinping promised right from the start that there should be more cooperation, environmental protection and the fight against corruption in the future. Take him at his word, said Altmaier.

Xi launched the "New Silk Road" in 2013. China is financing a network of new ports, railways, roads and industrial parks in Asia, Africa and Europe. Critics warn that poor countries may find themselves in a "debt trap" and political dependency on Beijing. They also fear damage to the environment.

The guest of honor at the summit is Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan. Pakistan has become one of China's most important partners - and is itself in an economically and politically difficult situation that relies on China. Find out more about the backgrounds here.

On the "silk road" summit Xi wants to polish up above all the bad image of its mega-project. But behind it is no real change of course: This is a rhetorical change that does not change much in the political will, analyzed SPIEGEL correspondent Bernhard Zand in the video. He demands in the current SPIEGEL: "The world must reconsider its relationship to Beijing." Here you read his wake up call.

A few weeks ago, I was in Cambodia myself to see what effect Beijing's billions of investments will have on people there. You can see the result in our multimedia reportage.
