THE THEME OF THE DAY

#MeTwo: How Germany debates racism

The social media is currently shaking under the hashtag #MeTwo - Thousands of users report on Twitter since last week from shocking experiences of everyday racism. The inventor of the hashtag is Ali Can. He said in a video he shared via Twitter, "It may be - cheesy - beating two hearts in my chest because I'm more than just an identity."

"The fact is that many people with roots in foreign countries in Germany make racist experiences," writes my colleague Hasnain Kazim. He posts himself under the hashtag #MeTwo - and criticizes that some want to ridicule the debate.

The idea for #MeTwo had Can, after Mesut Özil resigned from the national football team - because he felt racially discriminated. It's no coincidence that the hashtag is reminiscent of the #MeToo debate - victims of discrimination and violence also reported here.

My colleague Jakob Augstein asks: "Does Germany need the Rassimus Hammer?" And notes that it is really not just about racism when discussing Mesut Özil's resignation - but that the debate is based on a very different problem.
