The theme of the day: En garde, Germany

Emmanuel Macron has had turbulent weeks: the yellow-vein movement almost drove the French president out of office. The pressure was enormous, a multi-week tour through the province and the announcement, among other things, to reduce the income tax, let him take a breather now.

Macron takes advantage of this little break to attempt a political reorientation in the second phase of his term. This also affects the relationship with Germany as the most important ally in Europe. "Germany has a production model based on low-cost countries in Europe, which is the opposite of the social project that I represent for Europe," Macron said recently. In a nutshell, this means: The 41-year-old wants to move away from the role as a reform student of the Germans, to the clock of a new European economic policy, writes my Paris colleague Georg Blume. Macron also already has a new name for its relationship with Germany: "fruitful confrontation".

In the course of today Macron meets Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Western Balkans Conference, which they have organized together. At the Chancellery, they talk to the six heads of state and government of the Western Balkan countries. The main focus is on the dispute between Serbia and Kosovo, as my colleague Keno Verseck writes. Of course the two of them will also talk about German-French relations and the future of the EU.

So many ice machines have bought New Zealand prisons in the summer of 2017/18 for inmates and staff. 600,000 euros cost the purchase, as a request of the opposition now revealed. In their view, it is a "waste of tax money". The authorities are defending the purchase of slush-ice machines (semi-frozen Trinkeis). It had managed to cool the minds. Maybe it would be an idea for many a parliament, right?

My evening: the recommendations for your end of workday

What you might look at: barren landscapes, low clouds, marmot hunters, wrestlers - Mongolia is a country that is still largely unknown and at the same time totally fascinating. For 17 years, Frédéric Lagrange traveled to Mongolia for weeks on end for a photo project. Click here for a selection of his impressive pictures.
