The topic of the day: Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank cancel merger

They have been examining, calculating and negotiating for six weeks. In almost identical press releases, Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank then surprisingly announced in the morning that the merger plans had crashed.

The two CEOs Christian Sewing (Deutsche Bank) and Martin Zielke (Commerzbank) justified the decision with "implementation risks, restructuring costs and capital requirements". According to SPIEGEL information, it was mainly German bank chief Sewing, who shied away from the step. For him, the merger of the two big banks that have been through difficult years seems too complex. Whether this rejection was correct is highly controversial. In the analysis of my colleague Stefan Kaiser, you can read about the difficulties that both financial institutions are facing and whether job losses are threatening.

Hardworking, polite, obedient - that's how Christian Sewing got to head Deutsche Bank. After the end of the talks with the Commerzbank now everything depends on him. But to save the Deutsche Bank, he needs what he has been missing: courage and hardship. Our colleagues from manager magazin have portrayed the "rubble man".

Criticism ignites in Berlin now especially on the role of Finance Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD). He had fought for a merger, dreamed of a national bank champion. The opposition parties describe his behavior as "amateurish acting", as my colleagues David Böcking and Christian Teevs write.

So many percent of the participants of our non-representative vote (17 clock, more than 22,600 votes) mean that the penalty for FC Bayern Munich in the DFB Cup match against Werder Bremen was unjustified. They say: Bayern striker Kingsley Coman dropped too easily in the 78th minute in the Werder penalty area. However, referee Daniel Siebert saw things differently on Wednesday evening and decided on a penalty for Munich. A game-decisive scene, finally, the Bremen had scored within minutes and scored twice to 2-2. The Bayern won by the converted penalty 3: 2 in Bremen and move into the cup final. My somewhat biased opinion: no penalty.
