United States: cautious on abortion, Donald Trump wants to let each state legislate

Forced to take a position on the question of the legal deadline for abortion, Donald Trump avoids promising a national ban on voluntary termination of pregnancy (abortion). In a video broadcast this Monday, eight months before the presidential election, the former president sticks to the decision of the Supreme Court: he assures that it is up to each state to legislate on the issue.

His most conservative supporters will surely be disappointed. They were hoping for the promise of a ban on abortion at the national level, at least beyond fifteen weeks of pregnancy, as

Donald Trump

's entourage had suggested in recent months.

Because after the validation of the law prohibiting abortion after six weeks of pregnancy in Florida, a clarification of its position was increasingly expected on the right and on the left, observes our correspondent,

Finally, the Republican candidate kicks in. He assures in a video published on his Truth Social platform, after months of delay, that it is up to each State to decide on the legal deadline for abortion, just as the Supreme Court decreed by canceling the Roe versus Wade judgment in June 2022.

Donald Trump is content to congratulate the six conservative judges, including three appointed by him, for their historic annulment of the federal right to abortion, while being careful not to go beyond that. The Republican primaries are over; the former president no longer addresses only his conservative base and, he knows, a large majority of American opinion is hostile to a national ban on abortion. This caution is holy bread for

Joe Biden

: Donald Trump has simply “

got entangled

” on the question of abortion, scolds the head of state.

Abortion, a campaign issue

Vice-President

Kamala Harris

, Joe Biden's running mate, regularly travels to American campuses in the most contested states in the election to discuss abortion. “

Across the country, extremists are attacking women’s access to health care and reproductive rights

,” she again denounced at the end of March in North Carolina, urging Americans to support Joe Biden on November 5 to protect access to abortion.

Across the country, Democrats have also encouraged the organization of mini-referendums on abortion in several decisive presidential states – Arizona, Nevada, Pennsylvania – on the same day as the election between Donald Trump to Joe Biden.

Since the Supreme Court's 2022 decision, conservatives have lost every referendum or vote addressing the issue of abortion and around twenty states have banned or severely restricted access to abortion.
