"The biggest attack"

In Lebanon, Hassan Nasrallah said - in a speech addressed to the Iranian military leader Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who was killed in the attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus - that targeting Iranian advisors in Damascus is the largest Israeli attack of its kind in Syria in years.

He added that the role of Iranian advisors is to help the resistance in Palestine and Lebanon against Israel, as he put it.

The French news agency, citing a source close to Hezbollah, said that Zahedi was the only non-Lebanese member of the party’s Shura Council.

Major General Mohammad Reza Zahedi is the most prominent Iranian military leader to be targeted since Major General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force, who was assassinated by a US air strike in Baghdad in January 2020.

On the evening of April 1, Iran announced that the consular section of its embassy in Damascus had been subjected to an Israeli missile attack, while the Iranian Revolutionary Guard reported that 7 of its members had been killed, including Zahedi.

While Israeli Army Radio denied targeting the Iranian embassy building, and claimed that it bombed a building adjacent to it that served as the military headquarters of the Revolutionary Guard.
