Gabon: the national dialogue begins its work after a postponement and multiple controversies

In Gabon, the national dialogue officially begins its work this Monday, April 8. Until April 30, 600 participants, politicians, religious, military and members of civil society are at the Friendship Stadium to outline the Gabon of tomorrow. Seven months after the military coup, the consultation must lead to profound institutional, political, economic and social reforms in the country. Since Monday, the committees have been at work.

Three major commissions were created for this national dialogue: political, economic, social. Inside, 12 subcommittees in total, and the 600 panelists divided into these groups.

This start of activity, after

its solemn opening

, comes as new controversies have emerged in recent days, since many people wanted to register in the groups responsible for political issues. In the end, the Ministry of Institutional Reform, which organizes it,

had to rebalance the groups

: not everyone necessarily finds themselves in the subcommittee of their choice, which caused people to cringe.

“

This is a national dialogue, not political. The parties are qualified to discuss all subjects, particularly economic and social. And on institutional issues, all citizens have the right to participate in the debate

,” replied a member of the dialogue office.

The 600 commissioners will be able to submit written comments, to avoid a cacophony. This is particularly true if they want to modify the internal regulations, the terms of reference or the working methodology... Crucial elements which will guide the debates until the end of the month.

The day will also allow the examination of the major consultation organized with the Gabonese until February: 38,000 contributions had been collected. They will be examined, then ultimately, a diagnosis of the situation in the country must be made. All before proposing reform solutions and resolutions: we are waiting for them to finally be translated into legal texts by President

Brice Oligui Nguema.
