United States: an earthquake causes New York to shake slightly, a rare phenomenon

A rare magnitude 4.8 earthquake struck on Friday April 5, very close to New York, on the other side of the Hudson River, in neighboring New Jersey, causing the skyscrapers to shake slightly for about fifteen seconds. It was felt as far away as Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. No significant damage or injuries were reported.

New

Yorkers

were especially surprised. The latter generally expect a possible shooting more than an

earthquake

. The phenomenon remains extremely rare. The shock, which lasted about twenty seconds, was felt from the Bronx, in the north, to Brooklyn, in the south, more or less intensely. Some schools were temporarily evacuated.

Residents took to the streets before resuming their activities. At the UN, the Security Council was even interrupted for a few minutes, as the cameras in the room began to shake.

New Yorkers received two alerts on their phones. In the end, they took the event with a lot of humor. “

 I'm fine

,” the Empire State Building account posted on X (formerly Twitter). Photos of toppled lawn chairs were also posted on social media, with the caption “

we will rebuild

”.
