Sudanese press sources reported on Friday that the Sudanese army launched an operation to regain control of Al-Jazira State, south of the capital, Khartoum, through 5 axes.

The sources said that the army was able to regain control of Umm Al-Qura locality, east of Al-Jazira State, from the Rapid Support Forces, which took control of the state adjacent to Khartoum last December.

She stated that this military operation is considered one of the largest ground operations witnessed in the war that has been ongoing since April 15, and confirmed that military operations have been active in all axes, within a plan supervised by the President of the Sudanese Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Army, Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan.

The sources explained that the armed forces destroyed a number of combat vehicles using aircraft, drones and tanks.

Informed sources estimated the force currently charged with regaining control of the island at about 40,000 fighters, equipped with various types of weapons and supported by marches and military aircraft.

He promised to celebrate

Al-Burhan had promised to “celebrate victory soon,” during a speech before a crowd of artillery soldiers in the city of Atbara in the Nile River state in the north of the country.

Al-Burhan said that the armed forces are “capable of deterring anyone who dares to tamper with the capabilities of the Sudanese people and undermine their dignity and sovereignty,” reiterating that “the armed forces will proceed to end the war soon.”

Last Tuesday, the city of Atbara was subjected to a drone bombardment targeting a group breakfast organized by a battalion supporting the Sudanese army in its war against the Rapid Support Forces.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army led by Al-Burhan and the Rapid Support Forces led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) have been fighting a war that has left about 14,000 dead and more than 8 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
