Alongside Macky Sall since 2005, Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne was a faithful among the faithful. Director of cabinet while Macky Sall was still only Prime Minister, in 2014, he was in turn

appointed head of government

by the man who is now president. The two men will continue to follow each other. In 2019, Boun Abdallah Dionne became Minister of State, then Secretary General of the Presidency. Each time, he occupies key positions of trust for President Macky Sall.

In September 2023, as the presidential election is being prepared, he is one of the four favorites to be the presidential majority candidate. But Macky Sall nominates Amadou Ba. Boon Abdallah Dionne then decides to

present a dissident candidacy

. For a long time, he hoped to rally those in the majority who were unconvinced by the profile of former Prime Minister Amadou Ba, or even to obtain instructions from Macky Sall to vote for him.

Emergency evacuated on the eve of the presidential election on March 24, Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne, who had suffered from kidney failure for a long time, was unable to complete his electoral campaign. He finally died on April 5 in a Paris hospital.

I am saddened to learn of the death of former PM Mahammed Boun Abdallah Dionne. Senegal loses a valuable executive and I a long-time companion. My heartfelt condolences to widow Caty and her family. I salute his memory. Rest in peace.
