Peru: Dina Boluarte entangled in the Rolex scandal, the executive and Congress disowned by public opinion

In Peru, the president, Dina Boluarte, is still mired in the so-called “Rolex Gate” scandal for the purchase, and alleged non-declaration, of luxury watches. The prosecution, which is due to hear the president this Friday, has opened an investigation against him for “illicit enrichment”.

The so-called “Rolex Gate” affair continues to grow in

Peru

. Last Saturday, the president's home and office

were searched

. But the investigators drew a blank. Dina Boluarte must be heard today (Friday) by the prosecution to explain the unknown origin of the watches, four Rolexes, but also Cartier jewelry, all estimated at more than $500,000. There are also suspicious bank transfers, of several hundred thousand dollars, that the president would have received, reports our correspondent in Lima,

Dina Boluarte

remains silent on the merits of the case. During her only speech to the Nation last Saturday, she posed as the victim of a frame-up. “

The president is systematically attacked,”

she declared.

Enough of using certain media to generate chaos and uncertainty! Enough of wanting to create smokescreens and a conspiracy against the country!

It is in this context that Congress – the only parliamentary chamber – gave

its vote of confidence on Wednesday to the government

led by the new Prime Minister of Peru, Gustavo Adrianzén, appointed by Dina Boluarte. This 57-year-old center-right lawyer replaced Alberto Otarola at the beginning of March, after the resignation of the latter targeted by an investigation for influence peddling. His government is the third in sixteen months.

Seventy deputies out of one hundred and thirty gave him their confidence, seventeen abstained and thirty-eight voted against. And yesterday, Thursday, parliamentarians rejected two requests for impeachment against the president: the two motions “were not admitted” to debate by Alejandro Soto, the president of the Parliament controlled by right and far-right parties , who support the president.

The opposition denounces a pact described as “corrupt” between a weakened government on the one hand, and the Congress. Two completely disavowed powers: they receive more than 85% unfavorable opinions while Peruvians struggle with a degraded economic situation and growing insecurity.
