The Portuguese authorities found, this Friday morning, a second body which could be that of the French tourist missing with his wife since March 16 on the island of Madeira. On Thursday, the body of a woman was discovered by a foreign hiker who was hiking through a mountainous area in the municipality of Sao Vicente. 

The Portuguese authorities found a second body on Friday morning which could be that of the French tourist missing with his wife since March 16 on the island of Madeira, the day after the discovery of his wife's corpse, we learned to the police. “We can confirm the discovery this morning of a second body,” a Madeira police spokesperson told AFP, without further details.

Everything seems to indicate that it is the body of the missing French tourist

The day before, the body of a woman had been spotted at the end of the day by a foreign hiker who was hiking through a mountainous area in the municipality of Sao Vicente, police commissioner João Gois told the Lusa press agency. The second body found on Friday, that of a man, was found "around 10 meters lower", explained the commissioner, adding that he has not been formally identified, but that everything seems to indicate that he was acts of the other missing French tourist - particularly his attire.

The search resumed Friday morning on the north coast of the Portuguese island, in the hope of finding the other member of the couple. The information was also confirmed by French authorities. "Yesterday the corpse of a woman was discovered on a path in the municipality of Sao Vicente in Madeira. In addition, following further research, the corpse of a man was discovered today," said Bruno Sauvage, the Montauban prosecutor. “Investigations are currently underway to formally identify these people and it is therefore impossible to indicate with certainty that they are the couple,” he added.

French justice announced last week the opening of an investigation into the worrying disappearance of a French couple from Beaumont-de-Lomagne, in Tarn-et-Garonne, in the south of France. The two tourists, who run a bakery according to the French press, were on vacation on the island of Madeira and gave no further sign of life after leaving on March 16 for a "little hike" in Sao Vicente. It was their 27-year-old daughter who, not seeing them return even though they had only left with two bottles of water, had raised the alarm the same day, the prosecutor said in a press release.
