Immigration will be one of the themes of the European elections next June. The latest figures from INSEE regarding France speak for themselves: the country experienced a 35% increase in entries into the territory in 2022 compared to 2021. An increase particularly linked to the context of the war in Ukraine.

According to the latest INSEE barometer published Thursday on migratory flows, the number of immigrants entering France in 2022 is significantly increasing compared to previous years.

An increase of 35% compared to 2021

The figure is at its highest since the start of INSEE measurement 18 years ago: 331,000 immigrants entered France in 2022, an increase of 35% compared to 2021 and 21% compared to the two points. highs recorded before the health crisis in 2018 and 2019. A sharp increase which can be explained in particular by the context of war in Ukraine. Thus, between 2021 and 2022, the number of Ukrainians entering France has increased almost 30-fold. Ukrainian nationals, two-thirds of whom are women.

According to INSEE, seven million immigrants lived in France in 2022, or 10.3% of the total population. For comparison, the immigrant population represented 7.4% of the population living in France in 1975 and 5% in 1946.
