The Justice and Development Party may not have been confident of victory when it ran in the recent Turkish municipal elections, but what was truly surprising was the significant victory achieved by the opposition Republican People's Party in these elections that took place a few days ago.

About a year ago, the coalition led by the Justice and Development Party had won the parliamentary elections, and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan had won a new term, but this time voters turned their backs on the party, so its tally was limited to winning only 24 municipalities, compared to 35 for the Republican People’s Party.

The municipal elections in Turkey also witnessed a remarkable rise of the New Welfare Party, led by Fatih Erbakan, the son of the historical leader Necmettin Erbakan.

The new episode of "Al Jazeera Net Panorama" deals with these elections and examines the results and their analysis.
