In Burma, security forces shot down seven drones over Naypyidaw on Thursday April 4, the junta said, in what constitutes one of the rare attacks against the capital built by the military.

Four drones targeting Naypyidaw airport, and three others approaching Zayarthiri township were "successfully shot down and destroyed", the army communications team announced.

No casualties or damage have been reported, it is specified.

The incident prompted the temporary closure of Naypyidaw airport around 10 a.m. (3:30 GMT), according to an airport source who requested anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the press.

One of the drones that was shot down was carrying a bomb, according to this person.

A group from the People's Defense Forces (PDF), which took up arms following the 2021 coup, reportedly announced it had launched drones against military targets in Naypyidaw, local media reported.

AFP was unable to contact this group.

The city of Naypyidaw was built ex nihilo by the army in the 2000s, to counterbalance the influence of Rangoon, a cultural, commercial and political center considered to be a hotbed of protest against the junta.
