In Rillieux-la-Pape, a suburb of Lyon, a bus was set on fire in the city center during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday by young people who wanted revenge for arrests which had taken place earlier in the day. Fortunately, there were no victims, but other violence took place such as projectiles being fired at the police.

Everything happened on Tuesday at 11:30 p.m.... A bus, which, at this late hour, only carries a few passengers, was traveling in the Velette district, in the center of the new town of Lyon. The vehicle is then attacked by a group of ten to twenty young people, whose objective is to set the vehicle on fire, explains the mayor of the town, Julien Smati. "They simply used gasoline. The perpetrators entered the bus, took everyone out and set the bus on fire with jerrycans of gasoline."

An open investigation

“They were masked and hooded people,” continued the elected official. “For me, it is linked to arrests which took place a little earlier in the afternoon on a truck which was transporting stolen motorbikes? It was a somewhat difficult arrest and the same evening, we had this attack of the bus which is, in my opinion, a retaliatory action". A little later, a car was also set on fire and the police were subjected to projectile jets.

An investigation was opened to try to find these young people. So far, only one arrest has taken place, that of a minor. The CRS 83 company also set up in the town of Rillieux-la-Pape to prevent any overflow and on Wednesday evening, the area was no longer served by public transport.
