On the 1st, the consular building of the Iranian embassy in Damascus, the capital of Syria, was attacked by a missile, killing the leaders of the elite military forces, and Iran is showing signs of retaliation, saying the attack was carried out by Israel.

At the request of Iran and Russia, the Security Council held an emergency meeting on the afternoon of the 2nd and just after 4 a.m. on the 3rd morning Japan time.

Russia's Ambassador to the United Nations Nebenzha strongly condemned the attack, saying, ``Israel's attack is a violation of its sovereignty and cannot be tolerated. The international community must condemn this reckless act.'' Iran's Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations also condemned it as a terrorist attack. ``Iran has the legitimate right to take a firm response,'' he said, insisting that he would take countermeasures.

In response, U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Wood, who has defended Israel, said, ``I cannot confirm whether the attacked building can be considered a diplomatic facility,'' and added, ``Iran and Iranian-backed organizations are escalating tensions in the region.'' On the contrary, he accused Iran of threatening regional stability.

As the fighting between Israel and the Islamic organization Hamas continues in the Gaza Strip, and the conflict between Israel and Iran, which supports Hamas, deepens, there are a number of opinions from various countries expressing concern that tensions will spread throughout the Middle East. The ambassador also appealed, ``What we desperately need now is stability.''
