Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dabaiba pledges not to give up power to a new government without holding general elections (Reuters)

Reuters quoted a Libyan minister as saying that the home of Prime Minister of the National Unity Government, Abdul Hamid Al-Dabaiba, was attacked by rocket-propelled grenades, adding that the attack did not result in any human casualties.

The minister, who requested to remain anonymous, confirmed in his letter that the attack only resulted in some damage, without providing further details.

Two citizens reported that they heard strong explosions near the sea in the upscale Andalus neighborhood in Tripoli, where the Prime Minister’s house is located.

One of the citizens indicated that security forces reinforced with vehicles were deployed in the area after hearing the sound of strong explosions.

Since the outbreak of the NATO-backed uprising in 2011, and the disintegration of the country in 2014 into east and west with two governments in each, Libya has not witnessed any stability.

A national unity government headed by Dabaiba was formed through a UN-backed process in 2021, but parliament in the east refused to recognize its legitimacy at the end of that year after an attempt to hold general elections failed, leading to a prolonged period of political stalemate.

At the beginning of last March, 3 prominent Libyan leaders announced their agreement on the “necessity” of forming a new unified government to supervise the long-awaited elections.

Dabaiba affirmed his commitment not to give up power to a new government without holding general elections.
