Bolivia: ex-president Evo Morales wants a primary against President Luis Arce

In Bolivia, the MAS, the ruling party, still does not know who its candidate will be for the 2025 presidential elections. Division has reigned for months between ex-president Evo Morales and Luis Arce, the current president. To try to preserve the unity of the party with a view to the presidential election, Morales proposed on Sunday March 31, 2024 to organize an internal party primary.

It’s a never-ending saga. In

Bolivia

, the presidential election will only take place in a year and a half and yet the question of the MAS candidate is already on everyone's minds. For more than a year, the division has been palpable between the two heavyweights of MAS,

Luis Arce

and

Evo Morales

. The latter very regularly criticizes the government, President Luis Arce is presented as a traitor to the party and he was even excluded from the party in October 2023.

Evo Morales' new proposal to organize internal party primaries is therefore a surprise. His idea is simple, that the two leaders confront each other internally so that the unity of the MAS is maintained during the presidential election. “

If Luis Arce wins, I will campaign for him and if I win, he will campaign for me

,” former President Morales explained this Sunday.

Among the supporters of Luis Arce, it is an end of refusal. The government spokesperson recalled that a decision of the Plurinational Constitutional Court prohibits more than two continuous or discontinuous presidential mandates. A legal decision contested in Bolivia, but which means one thing, for the anti-Morales he cannot be a presidential candidate. For them, the face-to-face between Luis Arce and Evo Morales will therefore not take place.
