Editor's note:

In 1924, Dr. Sun Yat-sen established the Whampoa Military Academy with the help of the Communist Party of China and the Soviet Union. The teachers and students of Huangpu made great achievements in the struggle against imperialism and feudalism, and in the struggle for national unity and independence, and made significant contributions to the Chinese revolution. On the occasion of the centenary of the founding of the Whampoa Military Academy, China News Service launched the 100-person oral history series "The Wind Rises in Whampoa" to search for 100 representative Whampoa alumni and descendants around the world, listen to the stories of the martyrs, and pursue the spirit of the ancestors, so as to better to unite the Chinese people at home and abroad to jointly contribute to the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and the complete reunification of the motherland.

Li Liejun participated in the Tongmenghui in his early days and was Sun Yat-sen's main military assistant. He participated in anti-Yuan and law-enforcement activities. After the September 18th Incident in 1931, Li Liejun actively called for resistance against Japan and sent his five sons to the battlefield, three of whom entered the Whampoa Military Academy. The second son, Li Ganju, graduated from Shanghai St. John's University and then studied in the 17th class of Huangpu. During the Anti-Japanese War, he served as Feng Yuxiang's secretary; the fourth son, Li Ganji, also graduated from the 17th class of Huangpu and served as the guard company commander of Commander Wei Lihuang of the Chinese Expeditionary Force; the fifth son, Li Ganhua , participated in the Huangpu Cadre Training Class in August 1944, and was later stationed in the tank battalion of the Chinese Army in India, serving as a driver and translator... Recently, Li Jiping, the grandson of Li Liejun and a member of the Shanghai Huangpu Military Academy Alumni Association, recalled in an interview with China News Service He said that in order to protect our family and country, my uncles actively joined the army and rushed to the front line. Without their spirit of revolution, sacrifice and struggle, it would be difficult for us to be where we are today.
