  • Newspaper Archive Torra announces that it will report to Justice the burning of a Puigdemont doll in Coripe (Seville)

After Puigdemont,

little Nicolas

, Iñaki Urdangarín and Rodrigo Rato, this Easter Sunday it was the turn of

the doll representing

Koldo García , the former advisor of former minister José Luis Ábalos, to be

shot and burned

, who is now being investigated in a

plot

of alleged

corruption

that benefited from the purchase of masks in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.

The burning of the Koldo García doll took place in the Sevillian town of

Coripe , a small municipality of about 1,300 inhabitants, 87 kilometers from the capital, which celebrates the

Judas festival

every Palm Sunday

, declared of

national tourist interest

. This centuries-old tradition is also celebrated in other towns in Spain and Latin America, where a doll representing Judas Iscariot is stoned, lynched or burned for his betrayal of Christ.

In Coripe, each year a character is chosen who has carried out some reprehensible action. This Palm Sunday, the selected one has been Ábalos' former advisor, in the crosshairs of justice for the corrupt plot that benefited from

million-dollar commissions

for contracts in the pandemic. The mayor,

José Godino

(PP), explained to

Efe

that, "although it is true that it has been exemplified with Koldo", what has been done this year is "to show rejection against anyone who has enriched themselves at the expense of the suffering of people in the

pandemic

."

The intense rain that has fallen in Coripe has not prevented the Judas festival from taking place, but it has forced the route that the procession takes through the town to be modified this Easter Sunday. Koldo García's doll has been hung on a fig tree and shot dead by

four hunters

, until his body, which is made of straw, has burned with the help of some

gasoline

.

The townspeople who make the doll do so jealously guarding the

secret of their identity

. He only reveals himself when he arrives at the place where he is lynched. The doll that represents Koldo García is bald, he is dressed in a suit, he has

wads of 500 euro bills

coming out of his pockets and he is loaded with masks. This protection element is what appears in the contracts of the alleged corrupt plot to which Koldo García is linked.

Making the doll is the function of the mothers of second-year ESO students from the local CEIP Iripo, as one of them,

Trinidad Atienza

, explained to Efe , who said that among them there is a draw to determine which two will be in charge of the doll. making of the doll, and the secret is jealously kept, both of the identity of Judas, and of which are the designated mothers.

The burning of Judas in Coripe carries with it controversies from previous years. In 2018,

the Movement Against Intolerance

filed a complaint against the organizers of these celebrations for the alleged racist overtones of the party, since the figure represented the murderer of the Almeria child Gabriel Cruz, Ana Julia Quezada. The case was closed. Also in 2019, a great controversy was generated when the burned Judas was the former president of the Catalan Generalitat

Carles Puigdemont

, a fugitive from Spanish Justice since 2017.

Before Koldo García, Ana Julia Quezada and Puigdemont there were other dolls that symbolized "burning something negative" such as those representing Iñaki Urdangarin (Nóos case), Rodrigo Rato (Bankia and black cards case), Miguel Carcaño (death of Marta del Castillo ), Bárbara Rey or little Nicolás.

Precisely, Francisco Nicolás intervened in the 2019 controversy, when it was Puigdemont's turn, and he recalled on his X account (formerly Twitter) when he was the protagonist of the burning of Judas.

"They burned me in Coripe in 2014 and I am not complaining

," he wrote on his social networks, downplaying these events, although he later deleted his message.
