Canel accompanied his post with a picture showing the Jose Martí Monument, one of the most important landmarks of the capital, Havana, being illuminated in the colors of the Palestinian flag.

The Cuban president is among the Latin American leaders most critical of the Israeli war on Gaza, which has been ongoing since October 7, 2023.

Latin American countries that consider themselves neutral regarding the conflict - such as Brazil and Argentina - strongly condemned the Israeli attacks on civilians in Gaza, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said, "This is not a war... it is genocide."

Belize and Bolivia severed their relations with Israel due to the war, and Colombia, Chile and Honduras recalled their ambassadors from Tel Aviv, and Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused Israel of carrying out genocide in Gaza.

Israel is waging a devastating war on the Gaza Strip, leaving tens of thousands of victims, most of them children and women, a humanitarian catastrophe and massive destruction of infrastructure and property, which led to Israel being brought before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing genocide.
