War in Sudan: the critical situation of children in refugee camps in Darfur

In Sudan, after a year of war, the scale of humanitarian needs as well as the number of people displaced and threatened by hunger continue to grow. The country is “

subject to one of the worst humanitarian disasters in recent memory

,” warns a UN official, denouncing the lack of action by the international community.

The population is desperate. The most deprived find themselves completely unable to meet their most urgent humanitarian needs. And despite multiple appeals, aid still does not find its way to the most disadvantaged, especially in the multiple refugee camps in Darfur, humanitarian workers warn. Also, at the beginning of March, the Security Council called for an immediate ceasefire in

Sudan

during the month of Ramadan and for unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

But

the belligerents in the war refused the truce.

As a result, the humanitarian situation continues to worsen. The situation is particularly alarming in displacement camps where new refugees are joining older ones, drastically increasing the number of families in need of assistance in the camps.

Contacted by RFI, Awatef Assadek, nurse in the Assalam refugee camp in South Darfur, warns of the lack of medicine.

“We need life-saving medicines as the number of children suffering from severe malnutrition in Assalam camp is increasing sharply. The weight of these children is not increasing, on the contrary, it is decreasing. When the mother was asked to take the child to Nyala for hospitalization, she replied that she had no means of going there. We have very critical cases

,” she believes.

According to the

UN

, 5 million people could plunge into “

catastrophic food insecurity

” in the coming months. Already, more than 18 million Sudanese currently face severe food insecurity and more than 730,000 children suffer from acute malnutrition.
