UN officials fear Trump will reduce US financial contributions to the international organization if he returns to the presidency (European Archives)

There is concern among United Nations officials about the possibility of former US President Donald Trump returning to the White House again, if he wins the US presidential elections scheduled for next November.

According to senior sources within the international organization, who spoke to

Al Jazeera Net,

that if Donald Trump returns to the White House, “the United Nations will face more financial difficulties and political challenges.”

The sources suggested that the Trump administration would reduce US financial contributions - which are the largest in the international organization's budget - by more than the reduction it made during his presidency from 2016-2020, which would result in the United States withdrawing from supporting many international initiatives, including the climate agreement.

The sources explained that if Trump returns, UN peacekeeping operations “will face a serious financial deficit, which could lead to a security vacuum that will only be filled by bilateral agreements with great or regional powers and non-state actors, led by security companies - private armies - Especially in the continent of Africa.”

The sources revealed previous cases in which the international organization used some private security companies to implement non-combat contracts in Africa, including contracts to clear mines left by wars, in addition to some operations to secure the arrival of humanitarian relief.

For his part, Professor Eddie Meaney, professor of security and strategic studies at the University of Virginia, told

Al Jazeera Net

, "It should not be taken for granted that everything the US presidential candidates say will be implemented," noting that much of what is said during election campaigns "is not implemented."

Meaney believes that the majority of United Nations peacekeeping operations “are not successful despite their high cost, and therefore they should be reconsidered to identify the reasons for their failure, and thus rationalize them or adopt alternative models for carrying out multidimensional peacekeeping operations.”

On the same level, a Western source expressed concern about the increasing reliance on security companies (private armies), which do not belong to Africa, in military operations within the continent, justifying this by the fact that many of these companies “that do not belong to the continent deliberately prolong the conflicts, to secure their access to security.” Wealth, especially through granting mining concessions.
