Police in the

Netherlands

have cordoned off part of the city of

Ede

, in the center of the country, and have said that several people have been taken hostage in a building there.

Police spokesman

Simon Klok

told the Associated Press that people were being held hostage in the town of Ede, but declined to give further details of the incident or say how many people were involved.

"There is a hostage situation with several people in a building in the center" of the city of Ede, the police said in a statement published on the social

network of a terrorist motive

," the source noted.

The hostages were being held at

Café Petticoat

, a popular bar and nightclub in Ede, according to an AP photographer at the scene.

Officers evacuated 150 homes near a central square

, saying there was a person in the area "who could be a danger to themselves or others."

Images from the scene in Ede, a city 85 kilometers southeast of Amsterdam, showed police and firefighters on the streets in a cordoned-off area.

The town council reported that all shops in the center of Ede would remain closed.
