China News Service, Dongguan, March 30 (Reporter Sun Zifa) The Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (Institute of High Energy Physics) held the launch meeting of the second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source project in Dongguan, Guangdong on March 30, marking the launch of the second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source, which is known as the exploration of matter. The construction of this large scientific device, the "super microscope" on the microstructure of materials, has officially begun.

As one of the country's major scientific and technological infrastructures, after the completion of the second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source project, the research capabilities of the device will be greatly improved, and the experimental accuracy and efficiency will be significantly improved. It will be able to explore the scientific frontier and solve major national needs and industrial development. Provide scientific and technological tools for key scientific issues.

The second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source project mainly constructs 11 neutron spectrometers and experimental terminals. After completion, the number of neutron spectrometers will increase to 20, and the country's first muon experimental terminal and high-energy proton experimental terminal will be added. At the same time, the target beam power of the China Spallation Neutron Source accelerator will be increased from the 100 kilowatt design indicator in the first phase to 500 kilowatts.

According to Wang Sheng, deputy director of the Institute of High Energy, Chinese Academy of Sciences and commander-in-chief of the second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source project, the preliminary design budget for the second phase of the project was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission in January 2024, and the construction period is 5 years and 9 months. moon. After the completion of the second phase of the project, the China Spallation Neutron Source will be able to produce more neutrons in the same time, which will not only effectively shorten the experimental time, but also enable the experiment to have higher resolution, measure smaller samples, and study faster. Dynamic Process.

The China Spallation Neutron Source is the first major national science and technology infrastructure in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, providing an important scientific and technological core for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area to build a comprehensive national science center and an international science and technology innovation center. The construction of the second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source project will effectively promote the original innovation capabilities of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and form a cluster advantage with other large scientific facilities to contribute to the scientific and technological development and industrial upgrading of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Since the China Spallation Neutron Source completed national acceptance and was put into operation in 2018, the number of users has increased rapidly. There are currently more than 6,000 registered users, and the supply of machine time exceeds demand. Up to now, more than 1,500 user experimental projects have been completed (including more than 100 projects in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and abroad), covering many cutting-edge cross-cutting and high-tech R&D fields such as energy, physics, materials, engineering, etc., and in the field of stress detection of key aerospace components. A number of scientific and technological innovation achievements have been achieved in key areas such as lithium-ion batteries, solar cell structures, rare earth magnetism, new high-temperature superconductors, functional thin films, high-strength alloys, and chip single particle effects. It is precisely because of the fruitful output and strong user demand of the China Spallation Neutron Source that the second phase of the project was quickly approved and started construction.

It is reported that the second phase of the China Spallation Neutron Source project has made important progress in the pre-research of key technologies, including the fact that the country's first high-power high-gradient magnetic alloy loading cavity has been officially put into operation, and the P-band high-power klystron has successfully passed the acceptance inspection. , as well as breakthroughs in the development of neutron detectors, neutron conduits, and neutron polarizers, etc., which have laid a solid technical foundation for the successful construction of the second phase of China's spallation neutron source project.
