Russian drones and missiles targeted power plants in east-central Ukraine during the night from Thursday to Friday, the Ukrainian Minister of Energy announced on Friday, March 29, with Warsaw reporting surveillance reinforced Polish airspace. An air alert was issued overnight from Thursday to Friday throughout Ukraine.

This “massive attack” targeted targets, in particular energy production sites in the Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, and Cherkasy regions, Energy Minister German Galushchenko said.

The governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region said in a statement that "this night, air defense forces shot down ten drones over the region – in the districts of Pavlograd, Kryvyi Rig, Dnipro, Kamiansky. Four missiles were destroyed over Dnipro.

“Several energy installations were damaged (...) A man was injured on one of them,” added Sergiy Lysak.

In Kamianske, an agricultural cooperative was hit and five people were injured – a 5-year-old child and two women aged 19 and 47, who did not require hospitalization, and two men aged 36 and 47, who are in serious condition.

The Polish armed forces said their country's military planes took off to monitor Polish airspace due to Russian missiles in western Ukraine.

“Last night, intense long-range aerial activity by the Russian Federation was observed, linked to missile strikes against targets on Ukrainian territory,” the Polish army command said in a statement. “All necessary procedures for the protection of Polish airspace have been taken,” and Polish forces “are continuously monitoring the situation,” the statement added.

In total, Ukraine claims to have shot down 84 of the 99 Russian missiles and drones launched during the night.

Warsaw said on Sunday that a Russian cruise missile fired towards towns in western Ukraine had penetrated Polish airspace for 39 seconds.
