War in Sudan: US tries to restart peace talks

For almost a year, the army led by General al-Burhan and the FSR paramilitaries of General Hemedti have clashed bloodily. But Washington's special envoy said he hoped for a resumption of negotiations in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in April. Discussions which were launched almost a year ago, without success.

hopes for a resumption of negotiations on April 18. The American special envoy for Sudan believes that an opportunity is emerging with the Paris conference focused on the humanitarian situation scheduled for the 15th. “

It could easily create a natural momentum towards a return to Jeddah, if the Saudis accept to hold inclusive negotiations

 ,” said the diplomat.

Negotiations in Jeddah have been at a standstill for months. They had on several occasions enabled ceasefires to be achieved but none had held so far. It must be said that no side participated in a truly sincere manner, each side hoping to be able to win decisively on a military level.

The negotiations therefore never got to the heart of the problem and remained mainly focused on humanitarian matters. But this time, Tom Perriello believes that the situation on the ground is favorable, in particular because neither side is gaining the upper hand over the other and a famine is underway.

The American special envoy also wishes to expand the participants in the UN, the African Union, Igad, all three of which have also appointed special envoys for Sudan, but also Egypt and the Emirates which have a strong influence on the conflict.
