Almost a week after the Moscow attack, French intelligence is worried about a return of mass terrorism in France. This Thursday, Gérald Darmanin will go to the headquarters of the DGSI to discuss the subject with the question of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in mind.

Is Gérald Darmanin preparing to take on the role of “minister of attacks”? While the terrorist threat is very high in the territory, just a few days after the attack on Moscow, the Minister of the Interior has a meeting this Thursday at the DGSI, in Levallois-Perret. Counter-terrorism intends to brief its responsible minister on the state of the threat.

The DGSI's fear is to see mass terrorism return to France, committed with weapons of war or ramming vehicles. Commandos of three or four individuals dormant on the territory and activated remotely, from the Afghan zone. Counter-terrorism wants to avoid as much as possible the scenario of a coordinated attack on the day of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games, in front of cameras around the world.

Attention focused on Central Asian nationals

And this will also be, according to information from Europe 1, one of the messages from the DGSI to the Minister of the Interior. The current format of this parade of athletes on the Seine presents too many risks to be kept as is. “We have to switch to plan B,” recommends an intelligence source. Because with the attack in Moscow, claimed by the Afghan branch of Daesh, the threat has been reassessed.

“For the past week, there has been a lot of swarming among the Central Asian nationals that we usually follow,” we note within the services. French intelligence has therefore decided to massively target its sensors on Turkmen, Kyrgyz and Kazakh nationals. The challenge is to make this shift while maintaining a high level of vigilance over isolated Islamists, capable of taking action in just a few days.
