Former Democratic federal senator and former United States Vice Presidential candidate
Joseph Lieberman
died this Wednesday in New York from
complications after a fall,
according to his family.
The remembered politician was the
running mate of Al Gore,
then vice president of the United States, in the controversial 2000 elections, which
George W. Bush
finally won after a prolonged and criticized recount.
Lieberman, who represented Connecticut in the Upper House (1989-2013),
was 82 years old
and was accompanied by his wife Hadassah and other members of his family at the time of his death, according to a press release published on the social network. x.
His last term in the Senate was as an independent and
he never had qualms about moving away from the Democratic Party line.
The former senator, who was a defender of civil rights, the LGBTQ community, abortion rights and environmental causes,
sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2004,
but gave up after the result of the first primaries.
"Senator Lieberman's love for God, his family, and America endured throughout his life of service to the public interest," the statement further states.
Funeral services will be next Friday at Agudath Sholom Congregation in his hometown of Stamford, Connecticut.
Connecticut Attorney General
William Tong
mourned the death of whom he called his mentor and whom he remembered as a man "principled and tough" but also "incredibly warm and kind and dedicated to Connecticut."
"I would not be Attorney General today if it were not for your support and the many kindnesses you showed me over the years. It is a great honor to walk past your portrait every time I walk into my office. It is a loss for all of us. "said Tong, who recalled that he met Lieberman when he was attorney general and he (Tong) was 15 years old.
