Editor's note:

Since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, General Secretary Xi Jinping has published a series of important speeches and important articles. They are distinctive in style, profound in thought, and profound in connotation. They use history to reflect reality and look into the future, shining with the truth of Marxism. The charming language in these important speeches and articles is a true portrayal of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s governing philosophy and a vivid reflection of his personality charm. The "Daily Learning" column of CCTV launched the "Idiom Reading" series, which takes the form of "news cartoons + text reading" to help you understand the charm of General Secretary Xi Jinping's language from different dimensions.

Every civilization is the crystallization of human wisdom. Human beings live in a world composed of different cultures, races, skin colors, religions and different social systems. The coexistence of multiple civilizations forms the basis of world order.

Ten years ago, on March 27, President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, comprehensively and profoundly expounding his views and propositions on exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations. He pointed out that when dealing with different civilizations, we need to have a broader mind than the sky.

In the process of globalization, exchanges, integration and collisions among civilizations constitute the most distinctive features of this era.

The sky is boundless and can accommodate thousands of weather conditions. To have a "mind broader than the sky" means that we need to be tolerant to accept and understand the differences and diversity of civilizations around the world.

China is the largest developing country in the world, with a population of about 1.4 billion; Nauru is the smallest island country in the world, with a population of about 13,000 and a land area of only 21 square kilometers.

On March 25, 2024, President Xi Jinping emphasized during his talks with President Adieng of Nauru who was in China for a state visit that treating others as equals is a distinctive character of China's diplomacy. China has always maintained that all countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equal members of the international community.

Seek "commonness" by tolerating "differences" and seek "great unity" by respecting "differences."

Sino-Nautical relations are not only the epitome of China's diplomatic philosophy of equality for all countries, big or small, but also another vivid practice of friendly exchanges between countries with different sizes, histories, cultures, and social systems.

In May 2019, at the opening ceremony of the Conference on Dialogue of Asian Civilizations, President Xi Jinping pointed out that human beings are only distinguished by skin color and language, and civilizations are only distinguished by their colorful colors, but they are not superior or inferior.

Whether in Chichen Itza, which represents the ancient Mayan civilization, or in the ancient city of Samarkand, which has a strong Islamic civilization, or in the Luxor Temple, which symbolizes the ancient Egyptian civilization, and the Acropolis of Athens, which witnesses the ancient Greek civilization, President Xi Jinping has always understood and valued the civilizational creations of people from all over the world with an open vision and broad mind.

He emphasized that to understand the true meaning of various civilizations, one must maintain an attitude of equality and humility.

In the context of globalization, attitudes toward different civilizations are an important indicator of a country's openness and international vision.

At the China-Central and Eastern European Countries Summit, China proposed to strengthen exchanges and cooperation in culture, education, tourism, sports and other fields; at the opening ceremony of the 8th Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China proposed to jointly implement "nine Project"; at the first China-Arab States Summit, China proposed to promote cooperation between 500 Chinese and Arab cultural and tourism enterprises...

With a mind broader than the sky, China actively embraces civilizations from all over the world. It not only demonstrates its cultural confidence and openness, but also contributes Chinese wisdom and Chinese solutions to the construction of a lasting and peaceful world.

Exchanges and mutual learning are essential requirements for the development of civilization.

President Xi Jinping once profoundly explained this truth: All living organisms need metabolism, otherwise life will stop. The same goes for civilization. If it isolates itself for a long time, it will inevitably decline.

Treating different civilizations with a broad mind means being able to respect and tolerate different cultures, thoughts and concepts, and being able to accept and understand others with an open mind, thereby promoting the exchange and integration of civilizations and promoting world peace and development.

Under China's "Belt and Road" initiative, the Maldives has its first cross-sea bridge, Laos has changed from a "land-locked country" to a "land-linked country", and the African continent has its first CDC with modern office and experimental conditions. China-Europe freight trains build a safe and smooth lifeline for the production and supply chain in a turbulent world...

The civilizations of various countries are integrated through exchanges and developed through integration. Each has its own beauty, others have their own beauty, and they share the same beauty, which brings together the power of civilization to jointly promote the modernization process of human society.

In March 2023, at the high-level dialogue between the Communist Party of China and world political parties, President Xi Jinping proposed the "Global Civilization Initiative" for the first time. The initiative once again emphasized the need to "adhere to equality, mutual learning, dialogue, and tolerance among civilizations."

Gani Ur-Rehman, Director of the Institute of Asian Civilizations in Taxila, Pakistan, commented: “To solve the common challenges faced by mankind, it is undoubtedly necessary to start from the perspective of civilization and promote the civilizational concept of equality, mutual learning, dialogue and tolerance. It is a long-term solution to the root cause.”

There are more than 200 countries and regions, more than 2,500 ethnic groups and multiple religions in the world. In the face of the "clash of civilizations" and "superiority of civilizations" theories concocted by a few countries, the "Global Civilization Initiative" undoubtedly points out a new direction for the peaceful development of the world.

On March 26, the Boao Forum for Asia 2024 Annual Conference kicked off. China welcomed people from all walks of life with a broad mind to discuss global governance strategies, discuss win-win cooperation, and once again open a new chapter of exchanges and mutual learning among civilizations.

Be tolerant to diversity, tolerance is a virtue.
