Objection to continued support for Israel is increasing in the US State Department (Reuters)

The Washington Post reported on Wednesday that a US State Department official working on human rights issues in the Middle East resigned yesterday, Wednesday, in protest against US support for the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip.

The newspaper said that the Foreign Affairs Officer in the Office of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Anil Shilin, resigned after a year of her service because she concluded that there was no point in trying to promote human rights in the Middle East as long as Washington continued to send weapons to Israel.

The newspaper quoted Shelin as saying that she was unable to do her job of defending human rights in the US State Department during her tenure.

Shilin pointed out that "trying to defend human rights has become impossible" with the United States continuing to support Israel with military equipment despite the large civilian losses in the Gaza Strip.

She also confirmed that she asked questions during meetings about why support for Israel is considered more important than other very important priorities, without receiving an answer.

She added that the comments of some US State Department employees about the importance of supporting Israel are often met with opposition from most employees.

She confirmed that her talk publicly about her resignation came at the request of colleagues whose personal circumstances prevented them from submitting their resignation despite their desire to do so.

The Washington Post stressed that Shilin's resignation is considered the most important resignation in protest against American support for Israel in its ongoing war on Gaza, since the resignation of Josh Paul, who was a senior State Department official, last October.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken acknowledged the existence of disagreements within the State Department regarding President Joe Biden's administration's approach to supporting Israel in its war on Gaza, in an email to employees last November.

This is after 100 US State Department employees signed a memorandum opposing Biden, accusing him of spreading misleading information about the war on Gaza, and considering that Israel is committing war crimes in the Gaza Strip, which makes the American president an accomplice to genocide, according to the memorandum.
